Four important facts to know about chemical peels before treatment

The summer sun can make most men and women excited to get outdoors and enjoy some natural sunlight. However, over the years, this ultraviolet light exposure can wreak havoc on the skin’s health and appearance. This is when most patients start to consider the benefits of treatments such as chemical peels, which can reverse sun damage while improving the texture and tone of the skin. Dr. Homayoun Sasson of Sasson Plastic Surgery encourages patients to learn about the benefits of chemical peels and fully understand how they work to achieve beautiful skin. Below are four important facts to know prior to getting a chemical peel:

  • Peels are not just for older adults. While some peels are great at addressing fine lines and wrinkles associated with older adults, they can also be integrated into skincare routines for younger adults in their 20’s and 30’s.
  • Not all peels are the same. There are a wide variety of chemical peels available at Sasson Plastic Surgery. Some are mild and provide light exfoliation. These are sometimes referred to as “lunchtime peels” as they are done quickly in the office and patients can return to their normal activities. However, other peels are more aggressive and can penetrate deeper into the skin, resulting in the need for extensive recovery and downtime by the patient following the procedure.
  • Peels can be used on other areas of the body. Chemical peels are not only for the face—they can be used on the neck, chest, back, and hands as well to reverse sun damage on these highly exposed areas.
  • Consider pairing chemical peels with dermaplaning. Dermaplaning can remove dead skin cells and vellus hair from the skin and can decrease peel flaking associated with mild to moderate chemical peels.
