10 Facts to know about your breast before surgery

You’d be surprised at some of the facts out there about breasts. If you’re considering breast surgery, it may be helpful (and interesting) to learn a little more about your breasts. From the world’s first bras to the world’s biggest breasts, here are ten little known facts about the country’s favorite body part.

Breast Fact 1: Women Are Typically Unhappy With Their Chest
According to the International Journal of Sexual Health, while most men were satisfied with their partner’s breasts, about 70% of women were unhappy with their breasts because of issues with size or drooping. So if you are unhappy with the appearance of your breast for whatever reason, you are not alone by any means.

Breast Fact 2: Breast Augmentation is (still) the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure in America.
Since 2006, breast augmentation has held its spot as the number one cosmetic procedure in the United States and has averaged around 300,000 procedures per year. The breast lift is another breast popular procedure that reached about 90,000 procedures last year.

Breast Fact 3: Breasts can naturally get extremely large.
Not all breasts are created equal. They come in a multitude of different shapes and sizes from small to very big. In fact, the Guinness World Record for largest natural breasts belongs to an Annie Hawkins-Turner of New York, whose around chest-over-nipple measurement rings in at an astonishing five feet! However, some women suffer from a condition known as macromastia in which their overly large breasts present physical, mental, and/or emotional discomfort. Cases like this can be treated efficiently with a breast reduction.

Breast Fact 4: Most women have breasts that aren’t quite identical.
If your breasts are uneven, don’t worry, that is completely normal. Most women have one breast is larger than the other by a fifth of a cup size. This can often making shopping for clothes or lingerie a difficult and frustrating task. Breast asymmetry is one of the leading reasons women give for wanting breast augmentation.

Breast Fact 5: The bras that we have today aren’t as old as you may think.
The bras we have today were not created until the 1920s by Maidenform founders, Ida and William Rosenthal. Before the invention of the modern bra, women were still lacing up their corsets under their dresses.

Breast Fact 6: Women are beginning to buy larger cup-sizes.
According to a recent survey by lingerie retailer, Intimacy, the most popular bra size is now a 34 double D. Just 20 years ago, the average was a 34B. While the popularity of breast augmentation procedures may factor into this cup-size boom, it may also be because…

Breast Fact 7: Most women are buying the wrong cup-size for their bras.
Intimacy’s study also found that 85 percent of women are wearing the wrong size bra. This may be because of an inaccurate measurement or simply because some women feel that a larger cup size may be more comfortable. There are professional bra fittings and new at-home kits to help women into a proper fitting bra.

Breast Fact 8: Breast pain is common for many women during exercise, especially when running.
According to the British Journal of Sports Medicine, nearly one in three marathon runners experience breast pain. The chances are, if your breasts are a little larger, then exercise like running can be a very difficult task.

Breast Fact 9: Breasts tend to move around A LOT.
The reason breast pain occurs with exercise is because of the vigorous movements that occur with the breasts. When you run, your breasts tend to move in a figure-eight and can travel up to eight inches in either direction. This is why it is always important to wear proper support.

Breast Fact 10: Women who get breast implants have been found to have a better sex life compared to before their breast augmentation.
According to a 2012 survey by RealSelf, 61 percent of women said that they are now having more sex after receiving implants and 70 percent said that their sex-life satisfaction had improved. A lot of this has to do with the boost in self-confidence that often results for women once they are comfortable with the way their bodies look.

Now that you know the facts about breasts, learn more about the procedures you may be considering for them.
