What Should You Eat After Chin or Jaw Implant Surgery?

Side profile of a woman after chin implant surgery.Eating after chin or jaw implant surgery takes a little planning, especially when tenderness or swelling makes chewing uncomfortable. Choosing soft, easy-to-eat foods can make meals easier while giving your body the nutrition it needs during recovery.

At Sasson Plastic Surgery in Great Neck, New York, American Board of Plastic Surgery-certified Dr. Homayoun Sasson brings over 30 years of experience and works alongside Donna Falk Carter, PA-C, MsPH, who has extensive surgical experience and is ACLS- and FEMA-certified.

What Are the Best Foods After Chin or Jaw Implant Surgery?

During the first few days after facial implant surgery, focus on foods that are soft, smooth, and easy to eat. Your specific instructions may vary depending on your procedure and incision location.

Good options can include:

  • Smooth soups: Choose lukewarm blended soups that require little or no chewing.
  • Yogurt: Soft yogurt provides an easy snack or breakfast option.
  • Mashed potatoes: Their smooth texture makes them comfortable to eat during early recovery.
  • Scrambled eggs: Eggs are soft and provide protein that supports healing.
  • Oatmeal: Well-cooked oatmeal can be filling without requiring much chewing.
  • Smoothies: Blended fruits and other nutritious ingredients can make meals easier. Follow our instructions regarding straw use.
  • Soft pasta: Once chewing becomes more comfortable, you may add well-cooked pasta.

What Foods Should You Avoid?

Crunchy, hard, sticky, and chewy foods can put unnecessary strain on your jaw. Chips, nuts, raw vegetables, tough meats, hard candy, and chewing gum are generally best avoided until we tell you it is safe to resume them.

Very hot or spicy foods may also irritate sensitive tissues, particularly during the early healing period.

When Can You Return to Your Normal Diet?

There is no single timeline that applies to everyone. Swelling, tenderness, your incision location, and the type of implant can affect when you are ready to chew normally again.

We may recommend gradually moving from liquids and very soft foods to foods that require gentle chewing. Following your post-surgery instructions matters even when your jaw starts to feel better.
