How Social Media is Changing The Way that We Pursue Cosmetic Surgery

How much does social media really influence our health decisions? As it turns out, popular social media sites like Facebook and Twitter may have more of an impact than most may think, not only having an impact on where we find information on a procedure like a face lift, but also our reasons for seeking one out in the first place.

When you’re in need of a good plastic surgeon, where do you begin to look? Ten years ago, most people would have rattled off a long list of tangible sources from a best friend or co-worker to the family physician. Today, things don’t quite work that way anymore.

An increasing number of people are seeking out health information, specifically on facial cosmetic surgery procedures, and making medical decisions based on a new and very different source of advice – social media.

According to a new survey released earlier this year by the American Academy of Facial and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS), 7% of plastic surgery patients sought out advice and information on plastic surgery through social media channels, rather than obtaining the information from friends or family members.

Social Media’s Growing Influence on Our Looks

However, social media’s influence on our looks does not stop there. According to the survey, there has been a 31% increase in requests for surgery as a result of one social media feature in particular: photo sharing.

With Facebook’s photo-tagging feature and new photography-based mobile apps like Instagram popping up, the chances of someone appearing in a photo somewhere are incredibly common. Many are often tagged in an unflattering photo and often un-tag these photos of themselves because they do not like the way they look.

Requests for cosmetic surgery due to reasons like this are on the rise as people begin to seek out facial procedures like the face lift or nose surgery (rhinoplasty) to improve their appearance in these social media photos. The fact is that social media is making many changes to cultural society. In fact, millions of users are gaining fame through these social media apps like Vine and Instagram. Actors, models, and comedians are no longer just for television. While social media continues to impact our lives in such big ways, it is no surprise that it is also influencing our appearances.

It is always important to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon before pursuing cosmetic surgery of any kind. If you have been curious about a certain cosmetic procedure, find out more below.
